What I Think About Job Boards

What I Think About Job Boards New: an EVENING JibberJobber User Webinar on Tuesday, March 9th at 7p EST. Register here. (other webinars listed here) LinkedIn for Job Seekers for $49.95 $25. Check out all the specials here. About once a week someone sends me a message saying they are not happy with the job search results in JibberJobber.  Heres a message someone wrote when they deleted their JJ account: All the jobs I find here Im seeing on other sites. They think JibberJobber is a job board. In reality, we tap into a job board service (Indeed.com) and just pull stuff from their site. Providing job board services is not a primary thing I want to offer.  There are already hundreds of job boards that you can go to, why in the heck would you come to JibberJobber for more job boards surfing? Providing job board services is not even a secondary thing I want to offer. Providing job board services might be a terciary offering of JibberJobber.  It is an afterthought.  It is not important to me, or our mission, at all.  I think its actually a smoke screen for the serious job seeker the professional who is looking for their next opportunity. Why? ** Because not all jobs posted are real. ** Because when I put my resume on Monster and CareerBuilder I got calls from scam artists, MLM  representatives, insurance agents, and others who had nothing of substance to offer me. ** Because some unethical people post fake jobs just to harvest resumes and build their talent pool. Or worse, they harvest resumes for identity theft purposes (think about how much juicy personal information you have on your resume). ** Because some of the real jobs posted there are already filled, but they have to post them just to satisfy company policy (that means, there is NO chance you will get the job, even if you get an interview, because the hiring manager already knows who he/she wants to fill the slot, but had to comply with HR policy and post it). Think about it when you worked at a company, how did the news of a new opening come out? First, the manager realizes there is a need. Perhaps someone leaves the department, or there is too much work for the current staff. Next, the manager talks to people in the department and asks who do you know that would be good for this job? THE MANAGER WILL GET AT LEAST ONE REFERRAL.  THESE ARE THE INSIDERS, THIS IS THE HIDDEN JOB MARKET.  THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO GET IN! Only a handful of people know about the job opening at this point. At this point people are brought in for interviews, OR the manager has to go through HR (depending on the company). If the manager goes through HR, and they have to post it, they might post it INTERNALLY. More people know about it now, but its still not open to everyone. Next, the job might get posted publicly.  This can be on the company job board, or any other job board (broad, specialized, geographic, etc.). This is where hundreds, or thousands, of people learn about the job. And this is where HR and the manager (or recruiter) get hundreds, or thousands, of resumes. Where do you want to be in this process? On the inside, and one of the handful of applicants who was highly recommended by someone in the department? Or one of hundreds of resumes, fighting for your eight seconds of attention from HR or the recruiter? If you rely on job boards for more than 15% of your job search, and you are looking for a professional position, YOU GREATLY MISUNDERSTAND THE JOB SEARCH. But who am I to opine on this?  I only spent 60 hours a week surfing job boards and playing that game.  I was too busy to network, and do what job search experts recommend. Job boards have their place, but JibberJobber is not a job board.  JibberJobber is a website to organize and manage your job search from your networking efforts to your target companies to the jobs you apply to keep track of them all in JibberJobber. Six Tips for Using Social Media to Land a Job - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Six Tips for Using Social Media to Land a Job - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career According to Jobvite, an online recruiting platform that surveyed employer social media use in 2013, 94% of recruiters use or plan to use social media in their recruitment efforts and 78% of recruiters have made a hire through social media.  However, many people use social media for personal reasons that can make it difficult to attract an employer or, depending on what is posted, could turn them off all together. Here are six tips to using social media to land a job. 1) Clean up your digital dirt.  Employers will do an Internet search on your name and judge your character based on what shows up. If your Twitter feed is filled with controversial comments or your Facebook page is filled with drinking pictures, you might hurt your chances of getting hired. Deleting content is a start, although it’s no guarantee that all the incriminating posts will disappear. Push down questionable search results by posting positive, career oriented comments instead. 2) Set up complete profiles including professional picture. Revise your social media profiles to reflect the professional you are. Share the benefits your skills and experience offer to potential employers. Include links to a blog or portfolio of work that highlights your job skills. 3) Post comments that show off your talent and knowledge of your work and industry. Instead of sharing what you had for breakfast or the latest TV spoiler-alert, share information or comment on current trends in your industry. 4) Connect and engage with others in your industry. The benefits of networking is that one person can lead you to other people who may have a job or who know someone who has a job. Seek out connections with influencers and people in your industry who can offer guidance and introductions. Don’t just post about yourself or ask for work. Instead, comment, share insights and engage with people as you would if you were talking in person. 5) Become a go-to person for information in your industry. A great way to attract potential employers is to be seen as an expert in the field. You can do this by posting and commenting on current trends and sharing insights in your industry. 6) Search for jobs.  Not only can you give a professional appearance on social media, but it can directly connect you with job openings. For example, LinkedIn has a job search database. Or you can use a job search hashtag on Twitter or Facebook to find work in your industry. For example, if you are an accountant, you can search #accountingjobs on Twitter. Social media can be fun and entertaining, but used correctly, it can lead to job opportunities as well. The key is to present yourself as a professional who is knowledgeable in your field.

October Networking Challenge Announcement

October Networking Challenge Announcement You know I networked like crazy in 2011 in my 4X4 networking challenge and met with 48 people I didnt know and 48 people I did know.  And in 2012, I am interviewing successful business women over Skype and sharing the videos with you!  Well, there is something missing this year. because I didnt challenge myself to network like crazy each month like I did in 2011, I am not networking at all. I know!  Its bad.  I am doing speaking engagements and blogging about networking and I havent been networking myself!  So I am coming clean and telling you that I am not perfect and I have definitely been taking a little break.  But, now it is time to get back to it! Ready for it? I am going to start another 4X4 networking challenge in October!  I figure by then a few of my work projects will be ending and I will have a little more time on my hands (hopefully, that never really happens though right?:) Not only that but until then I have plenty of time to prepare to make my month of networking like crazy a success. And I will be sharing my experiences with you which means that I have to do it. That is the reason that I was successful in 2011, because you all kept me accountabile and you were always checking in and making sure that I kept up my challenge throughout the whole year.  Thank you! But, there is going to be something different about this challenge! I have this idea.  Here and there I have been getting emails from people who are taking the challenge.  I have heard from other bloggers who are taking the challenge and even blogging about it!  I think that is SO awesome and I am so glad that I have encouraged others to start reaching out in order to achieve their dreams and goals.  But, I feel there is so much more encouragement and support that I can do.  So if you are reading this and know that you need to get your networking butt in gear, I want you to join me in October.  I wanted to put this little idea in your mind early so that you can think about it and mentally prepare yourself to start networking like crazy once October comes along.  Exciting, huh!! I really hope you will join me and we can do this together! If you want to join my October networking challenge, just leave a comment below with the people that you are going to meet in October.  If you want to go big, make a list of 4 people you dont know that you would like to get to know and 4 people you do know that you would like to get to know even better. If you are just starting out networking and you think I am crazy for meeting with 8 people, try 2-4 instead!  And remember, networking events count because you can turn those connections into future networking opportunities! Planning My October Meetings The most important part of growing your network is planning ahead.  So you have plenty of time before October hits.  Write down the people that you want to meet.  Here is who I am meeting: 4 People I Dont know But Would Like To Get To Know Career Development Manager where I got my Undergraduate degree (To brainstorm speaking opportunities for Fall:) College Students at UC Merced I am traveling there to speak in October and hoping for lots of opportunities to meet new people! Young Professionals Meetup group I have been wanting to go to this event for a long time.  Its on the calendar now and I am not going to miss it! TBD Still thinking about who this last special person will be! 4 People I Do know But Would Like To Get To Know Better A woman who I connected with a few years ago and I havent gotten in touch with since. Friend from my MBA program Previous co-worker A family member who I havent talked to in months  Whos on your list?  Leave a note in the comments with the people you are going to catch up with in October!

3 Reasons You Are Not Getting Promoted - CareerEnlightenment.com

2) Lack of career strategy.  Have you ever  worked in an organization which didn’t have a strategy? Very unlikely. Organization without a strategy is like a ship without a compass. And the same applies to your career. If you don’t have a career strategy, you will only get to experience your career, as opposed to accelerate it. Unfortunately, most of the people don’t have any career acceleration strategy whatsoever or, their strategy is based on a traditional (read: generic and rehashed) career advice such as “I need to put myself out there more” or “I need to network more” or “I need to work harder.”3) No systems  to execute that strategy. As the old saying goes, ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ There result of this  is that everything else gets more priority than your career. Every new email, every new idea of your boss, every new little project…they all start getting more priority and soon you find your self working harder but getting only an average grade at y our yearly performance review…while someone else gets promoted. The way to tackle this is to pay attention to your career acceleration every day. Block 5-10min in your calendar daily. You will use this short time to look at your one-page strategy document and decide on one thing you will focus on today, that will get you closer to your next role.In this way, you prioritize your career first, and only then millions of tasks that easily fill up your day. Every day you will feel one step closer to a job promotion and that you have control over your career. If youre interested to see the whole webinar, you can watch it  here.
